Alya is a transfer student enjoying popularity at her new high school, often sporting a cold shoulder while earning high marks in class. She ignores her nerdy classmate, Kuze Masachika, except for when she blurts out a flirtatious line to him in Russian. Little does she know, Kuze understands Russian, though he pretends not to. Let’s see where this wacky love story takes them!

Senpai’s take
Season picksMust watchSummer 2024A hot transfer student teases her otaku desk neighbor in Russian, not knowing he understands every word. Better than most of the subgenre, with a protagonist who has real rizz, genuinely entertaining banter and a fleshed-out supporting cast including two likable male friends. Doga Kobo's B team is less impressive than its best recent work but still beats most studios' A teams.
Worst of the seasonBad but funSummer 2024An exquisitely crafted piece of romcom trash that swerves will-they-won't-they cliches by having Alya confess in Russian to a boy who secretly understands, with a fake childhood friend covering for his estranged sister. Every character has a distinctive voice, the plot moves briskly with real twists, and it hits Kaguya-sama notes with more panty shots plus shades of Bunny Girl Senpai. Five solid gold dumpsters full of fireworks.
