“I have no interest in real girls!” So claims Okumura, the president of the school’s manga club. He’s your typical otaku, obsessed with a sexy (fictional) 2D manga character known as Lilliel. Then the new school year starts, and a (real!) 3D girl named Lilysa whose passion is cosplay joins the club. Lilysa convinces Okumura to become her photographer–and guess who her favorite manga character is? Not only that, but Lilysa is into modeling the fetishy stuff! The boundaries between 2D and 3D start to blur as this hot-blooded romantic comedy unfolds.

Season picksDecentSummer 2024A 2D-only anime club president falls for the cosplayer junior he photographs, basically what My Dress-Up Darling was assumed to be, minus that show's sakuga. Not a bad watch, but the manga is the better way to get its charming characters and weapons-grade fan service.
Worst of the seasonBad but funSummer 2024The bog-standard otaku harem My Dress-Up Darling was expected to be: a 2D-only club president photographs a cosplayer junior and a childhood friend who became a famous model just to get his attention. It gets the cosplay hobby details right and has solid women-supporting-women vibes, but it is pure male wish-fulfillment harem nonsense, slightly toned down from the manga. Three flaming dumpsters full of sexy cosplay outfits.
