Pulled into an otherworldly adventure with cute sidekicks and superpowers, you’d think Osamu hit the jackpot. Nope! From a time before pixels, the early 20th-century gloomy author just wants to find a quiet place to meet his maker, not to rack up XP. Sadly, his poetic demise is constantly thwarted by inconvenient heroics. Dive into the hilariously tragic life of the most reluctant hero!

Season picksMust watchSummer 2024Osamu Dazai, here just 'Sensei', is truck-kun'd into an isekai on the way to his final suicide attempt and wants nothing to do with the wish-fulfillment RPG life. Not for the easily offended, but watching a hero be completely done with the whole genre after one minute is cathartic. From the creator of Love After World Domination, it has the comedic chops to back its dark humor.
Worst of the seasonBad but funSummer 2024A surprisingly literary deconstruction of isekai built on the Japanese equivalent of Kurt Cobain jokes, only trashy for its excessive elf cleavage and an episode one tentacle monster. It knows what it is, but the animation could have been better: three golden dumpsters.
